About the Centre

Founded in April 2015 within Medical Clinic II – Cardiology at the County Emergency Clinical Hospital of Târgu Mureș, our Centre has become a national referral and excellence centre for the diagnosis, management, and research of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).

Through a multidisciplinary, patient-centred approach, we integrate advanced imaging, haemodynamic evaluation, guideline-directed medical therapy, and interventional strategies including balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) and referral for pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA).

National network and collaboration

As one of Romania’s nationally designated pulmonary hypertension centres, Târgu Mureș maintains close professional collaboration with other reference centres in Bucharest, Timișoara, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, and Oradea, helping standardise diagnostic and therapeutic pathways and improving equitable access to advanced care.

International collaboration

We maintain long-standing partnerships with leading European programmes,

  • Medical University of Vienna
  • Charles University & General University Hospital, Prague
  • European Health Center Otwock, Poland
  • Erasme Hospital, Université Libre de Bruxelles
  • Hôpital Bicêtre, Université Paris-Saclay
  • IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia — PEA surgical programme

We also collaborate with partner institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States for case discussions, advanced training, and multicentre translational research.

Research & academic visibility

Our scientific activity includes peer-reviewed publications indexed in Web of Science and Scopus on right-ventricular function, vascular–ventricular coupling, biomarkers, and patient-reported outcomes in PAH and CTEPH; team members contribute to high-impact journals as authors, guest editors, and reviewers and are active within the PVRI community.

We presented at PVRI 2025 Rio (29 Jan – 1 Feb 2025) and have accepted abstracts for PVRI 2026 Dublin (28 Jan – 1 Feb 2026), underscoring our Centre’s international visibility.

International registries & studies

We participate in the PVRI GoDeep Registry (University of Giessen-coordinated global real-world data initiative) and in multicentre international clinical studies focused on novel biomarkers, advanced imaging, and outcome prediction in pulmonary vascular disease.

Mission

Our mission is to combine clinical excellence, education, and research to improve outcomes and quality of life for patients with pulmonary hypertension, translating cutting-edge evidence into practice and strengthening Romania’s contribution to the global PH community.
